A little help from my bro.....

In graduate school, we have been assigned parts in a role playing game.
I have attempted to take it very seriously even though it isn’t for a grade because it’s for a dissertation. To a PhD candidate, dissertations are like your baby.  We can’t hurt his baby!

My avatar believes education is created by experience and I keep trying to incorporate the theory and play along like I’m an avatar but this one particular character is insufferable.

I login; probably more than anyone else in the cohort because this is my only chance to be creative and like I said, we can’t hurt his baby.  (Holy God, can they track how many times we lurk?  They all probably think I am crazy.  We can’t hurt his baby…)

I read it with excitement, I need a life…and my character was insulted.

Another character was rude to my character in an attempt to be funny.

No, that witch did not criticize me….

I’m done. I’m the only one posting and the character was rude.  No one else cares about his baby.
I need help.  I am not going to lose this game.  I haven’t blogged for fun in almost a year.  They gave me something creative to do and now I’m being hurled at with intergalactic insults.  I need someone who played Dungeons and Dragons until he was told to go to bed.  I need someone who can read an L.Ron Hubbard book in one sitting.  I need someone who sent me a plush Shoggoth stuffed animal as a baby gift.

I’m calling my brother.

“Yeah”

This is how he answers the phone.

“I’m playing a role playing game.”

“You?”

“Yes, me.”

“OK I know you got divorced three years ago but enough is enough, did you read that German fairy tale I sent you about the men in grey?  Momo?  No, even better, get out of the house. I’ve heard there is this site called OK Cupid….”

“No!  I have to play this game, but one character was rude to me.”

“So block the griefer…no problem….bye…”

“Hey! Wait a minute- I really need help. I can’t block him…he’s kind of a professor.”

“What???”

“Can you help me?”

“You have twenty minutes and then I’m packing for Louisiana.”

“Louisiana? Didn’t they just approve creationism?”

“What do you want, Big Sis?”

“Does mom know you are going to Louisiana?”

“Do you want my help or not?”

“Oh right…I’m doing a role playing game..…”

“Post-apocalyptic, Space Opera, Cyberpunk, or Steampunk ?”

“What?”

“You can’t just play a role playing game, there are different types.”

“Post-apocalyptic I think…everyone has been floating around for a while like that show with Edward James Olmos you sent me bootlegged DVDs of for my birthday six years ago, and they are coming together, like Caprica maybe?”

“BATTLESTAR GALLACTICA!  CAPRICA WAS THE PREQUEL!!!!! JESUS, DID WE GROW UP IN THE SAME HOUSE????”

“Ok don’t yell at me….it’s like that, post-apocalyptic.”

“War or natural cause?”

“Huh?”

“What caused the apocalypse- war or natural cause?  Oh please tell me it isn't religious…is this for church?”

“No –I told you, grad school and I have no idea why they are wandering around….Look, I made a move and then they were rude to me….”

“Somebody was a jerk on the internet? That’s never happened before.”

One thing all three of us siblings have is sarcasm and quick wit.

“So what do I do now?”

“Play it out Big Sis, that’s what you do…now it’s your turn.  Give it to him good.”

“What do you mean?”

“Don’t hold back, it’s your turn.  Show him what you’re made of.”

“Can I send it to you?”

“I’ll be in a bayou in Louisiana doing A REAL role play for the US Government.”

“Once again, does mom know?”

“Would you have known if you hadn't called about a game?”

We are such a close family….

“Fine”

“Fine”

“Love you”

“Love you”

Click- no byes, just a click
Play it out, that’s his post- apocalyptic advice. Play it out.  I have quite a bit of creative energy bottled up inside me that is dying to bust out.

Here goes nothing….

The Art of a fun Geocache.....

For one of my graduate school courses, I need to use technology that I’ve never used before in my personal life.

That begs the question I have a personal life.  If I do anything personal, it involves my three children. What technology do the four of us need?  We don't need I pads. We don't need a Wii. We have mastered Skyping my mother.  They know how to change the sounds on my phone so I don't answer it when it rings, but I keep looking for a cricket to let out of the house.  We need technology that will get us outside.

Once my son thought that if he plugged the directions to the ice cream store into the GPS, I’d just drive there instead of going home.  I almost did it but I don’t like him to think he has me…
Something new....Outside....a GPS.....

I have it!

Let’s Geocache!

Never heard of it?

Watch this video.  What a great idea.  We can go on a hike and look for a box.  It's using a map!  It's nature! It's technology!  It's building a family memory!

Ok…. We can do this.  First things, first.  Download the app on my iphone:

Hard to believe that seven years ago I had a flip phone and only my then husband called it. (Yes, I wrote CALLED!)

After you download the app (less than ten dollars- cheap for four people), you can register your team, and start looking for treasure!

We looked around for geocaches near us.

There are so many of them!

We decided on one very close to our house- right near the fairgrounds.  If I were going to mess this up, better let it happen when I can still get back by walking with the three of them versus the middle of nowhere when it might take a couple of days before someone worries we aren't home.
We ran into a friend who was able to take our picture:

My son took the phone and ran off, you would have thought it was a real treasure.  "This way mom!  This way! This way! Run! Sprint!!!!"
We went back and forth between the map and the compass:

The tricky part is when you get right on it and still can't find it. You move ten feet...nine feet...you get down to zero and you still can't find it.

Bushwacking?  What does that mean?

It means that your three kids will point while you move the plants out of the way to get to the box.
After roaming around near our house for more than an hour finally:

Hurray! We found it!  Yes!  It really is there and not some trick to get you in the middle of the woods.  We signed the notebook, left a trinket, and had so much fun we did it again!

And then…

Mommy got poison ivy.

Did the kids get it?

No....

Did some other perfect mom with her act together get it?

No.....

Me?  I'm covered in Poison IVY in the name of technology.

Now we have to get in the car again for another errand.

Hey Boys! Do we need a compass to find the pharmacy?

No mom, you’re good at going there….
First personal technology- done!

14: Pulled into Lent...

My day started like it normally does…

My daughter couldn't find her glasses..she found them, good you can still ride the bus. I have sixty projects to grade why did I give myself so much work…my son is eating applesauce out of a jar…I want to run because I feel gross but my hip is efffing killing me and I finally figured out why and I'm throwing away any pair of shoes older than my youngest child.
Went to pick up the Christmas cards and was so excited to mail them out....was going to address them tonight.  Then I got a call that my daughter's found glasses had one lense missing.  I had to finish a session with some 8th graders before I could go digging in her room for a lense...there it is, let's get back to the computer...
Message after message after message.
Are you ok?  Are you ok?  Are the children ok?
We can't remember what town in Connecticut you live in...
Texts...Facebook messages...IMs at work....a phone call from my frantic aunt in Raleigh...

And just like that…  within the span of thirty minutes, I was pulled out of Advent and into Lent.

Here I sit in my own house teaching on a laptop, feeling very grateful for my job.  Just last night I wrote about how I love the time off from it so I can explore my other interests.  Now I don't want to.
I'm in Lent:
  • A family is torn apart and left to have to deal with it- his problems are international news. How would you like the world to know your family's secrets?
  • I am a teacher.  I have taught in traditional elementary schools before.  I'm not a fire fighter. I'm not a policeman. Schools should be safe.  I feel like I lost colleagues today.
  • I am a mom of small children...enough said...breathe....

My phone rang one last time...it was my best friend- "Um, what are you going to say to your kids? I have no clue what to say to mine..."
I thought about it for a moment and this is what I will say to my kids:

Someone very ill didn’t get the help he needed and had access to things he shouldn’t have had.
So when you have an ear ache, you go to the doctor for amoxicillin, and when you have a speech delay, you get speech therapy.  And when you have a child that needs counseling, you find a counselor.
One tragedy doesn’t mean another isn’t coming.  I would love to protect my children from everything but I can't.  I never ask "Why?"  I don't.  I always ask, "What Now...."

Connecticut is a beautiful state.  I know the people in Connecticut.  Connecticut Yankees helped this Southern Belle during the darkest days of her life.   We will climb out of this hell.  We will do all in our power to make sure every child is loved and comforted and feels safe.   This state will use the resources it has to make sure that all are counseled and this will not happen again.
Lent is longer than Advent. It isn't happy, and it is very, very miserable.  But it ends.
And I'm going back to Advent in the morning- my three children need it.

13: 'Twas the night before the last day before the holidays....

This is my 15th year as a teacher. I've never taken a break.  Well, I did take three maternity leaves (although my administrator  did a happy dance  when my last child was born in July ten days early).

Every time I tried to quit,  another job fell in my lap. The universe must really want me to teach Spanish.

I have literally taught all ages, levels, and settings. I'm not exaggerating. I've taught preschool, high school, virtual, brick and mortar, suburban, inner city.....and I never taught a single way I didn't like.

Doesn't matter how old they are or where they live. Doesn't matter if they have an elf on the shelf at home.  Doesn't matter if they celebrate Hannukah, Kwanza, or nothing because they are Jehovah's Witnesses.  Doesn't matter how much they like you as a person, whether they hate Spanish or not.  (I've had several over the years tell me they hate Spanish, but I'm their favorite teacher.)

I know one thing to be true.

The last day before the holiday break....all the kids go crazy.

No one wants to conjugate a verb, or learn about Las Posadas in Mexico or the Reyes Magos in Spain.

And honestly..I don't want to teach it either...I want to get two weeks off just to be who I am.

I am not the only one who feels this way....even fictional teachers deal with it....here it comes...

In Harry Potter and the Goblet of the Fire, each teacher had a different way to approach the holidays and the dance coming along with it.

Flitwick gave up and let them play charm games.....

Snape gave a test (on poison antidotes no less, talk about a buzz kill)....

Binns just kept droning away about Goblin Rebellions.... (Sidenote- I always found it fascinating that he was such a boring teacher, yet he loved it enough to keep doing it after his death...or perhaps he didn't know what else to do???)

McGonagall was business as usual.....

Tomorrow is my last day for, as my colleague Heidi said, eighteen days off in a row.  My "Student children" are working on some projects they have enjoyed doing and get to present them on the web cams.  That's a good way to end the semester.

THEN my own "personal" children and I are spending the evening baking cookies, lighting Advent candles, watching Christmas Classic movies, and practicing lines for the Christmas pageant. Wouldn't you know it, Kenneth begged for a speaking part?  By the time he finishes 5th grade he will probably  have played everybody.  I know I did.  It makes for good memoir writing. :0)

We need to come up with a special name for the last day of school before the holidays!  Other than "last day of school" of course....

Witty and clever suggestions are always welcome....
